The Annual Meeting of the Mall Area Religious Council (MARC) on September 18th, 2004 was held this year at National American University located at Mall of America. The Theme: "Interfaith: One World Many Faiths, Beliefs, Races, Cultures" was fully reflected in the folks from many of the 38 member Congregations and Faith Groups in attendance. The lively discussion and dialogue was the "Marketplace Interfaith Movement in America and Worldwide" at its best..

Highlights included:
+CENTERING time was around the theme "Building Understanding & Respect for All Peoples" with a reading from the Qur'an by Arlene El-Amin (Masjid An-Nur Islamic Center) and prayer by Rev. Kenneth Williamson (Unity South Church.
+KNOW YOUR NEIGHBORS was a scholarly presentation this year on "Baha'i Faith as a World Religion" by Massoud Kazemzadeh and David Sterling.
+INTRODUCTIONS in small groups was facilitated by Ellie Watkins (Southtown Baptist Church and MARC Board Member). The result - new friendships happened - and growing respect for the neighbor's Faith while celebrating ones own Faith.
+ Welcomed nine new Member Congregations and Faith Groups as a sign of the increasing diversity in MARC membership - matching the growing diversity in the employees and 42 million annual visitors to Mall of America.
+ REPORTED continued expansion of the Places to Worship signboard at the Mall offering 41 options - telling shoppers, employees and new residents of all faiths - the locations and schedules of local Worship Sites.
+ANNOUNCED a new Golden Rule Window Exhibit entitled "ONE WORLD MANY FAITHS' at the entrance to National American University in partnership with the Mall Area Religious Council.
+REVIEWED MARC's intentional, slow, step-by-step adherence to Mall policy over 12 consecutive years of "interfaith events and spiritual presence" which has built trusted credibility with Mall Management.
+DISCUSSED numerous recent conversations with Mall Management to explore a partnership for the opening of a highly visible Interactive Information Kiosk (with focus on service to the Mall's population-mix of increasing Faith and Cultural diversity). MARC has reserved $15,000 hopeful for the day Mall Management is ready to partnership in this (or similar) project of service to the needs of our diverse communities in faith and culture at Mall of America and beyond in our local neighborhoods.
+DIRECTED MARC president, Rev John Chell, and the Board of Directors to continue conversations with Mall tenants who are often just discovering our "interfaith story", purpose and presence at Mall of America - in which MARC is always seeking new partnerships and ways to build respect and understanding among the vast, varied cultures and beliefs of God's diverse and changing community at Mall of America.
+ELECTED MARC Board of Directors with representation from the following Faith Groups: Baptist, Baha'i, Catholic, Hindu, Jewish, Lutheran, Muslim, Methodist and Unitarian Universalist.
+DECIDED to arrange 3 Table Dialogue options for MARC Member
Congregations and Faith Groups to meet with the Board of Directors around the topic: "Are there ways in which you can assist MARC and in which MARC can assist your Faith Group or Congregation in serving the local mix of cultural, religious and racial diversity needs?"
+CLOSING WORDS of encouragement and blessing were offered by Rev. DeltonKrueger (past MARC President and Co-founder) He noted MARC's interfaith model and growing recognition through the MARC website (meaningstore.org) and in USA, Canadian and worldwide publications.

"One Nation Under God"
Diana Pierce presented a message of hope through music and commentary. Arlene El Amin spoke for the Muslim community and John Chell for the Christian community.

Mall of America has been touched by concern over possible terrorism. The Faith Community and the All Seasons Wild Bird store brought people together at the Mall to celebrate the resources of the spirit and of the world of nature in times of stress.

This is a time for people of faith and hope to let others know how they feel about peaceful relations between the great world religions.

The Meaning Store is primarily ideas that make a difference. Those ideas are now made visible in several Meaning Store items available for purchase by interested persons.

Sometimes the message on a cup of tea or coffee does what needs to be done. Or maybe on a water bottle.

Other folks prefer a T-shirt with words that just keep on making a statement on Interfaith understanding.

The Meaning Products division is open for your attention.

 OASIS  - Arrived October 4, 2000 at Mall of America

Now that Oasis is open for business at Mall of America, the reality of being literally in the flow of thousands of people is upon the Board members and others who are doing the work of being at the cart.

Many Board members and volunteers from the congregations are taking turns being at Oasis. They speak with folks who stop by and sell message products to those who wish to make purchases.

Message products include books, cards and pictures, T-shirts, interfaith logo cups.   Focus is on the spiritual side of life - the hearts and minds of people are touched by the very presence of a religious site.

So many people tell how pleased they are to see Oasis present in the Mall.

Stop at the Mall - third level, east side, on the way over to Sears.  Give the person on duty encouragement and buy one of the message products.

A MARC Business Plan 9-22-2000

Oasis - the cart version of The Meaning Store at Mall of America

    + Oasis will develop the concept of a place at Mall of America for people who have interest in spiritual         meaning. The cart is a step on the way toward The Meaning Store, a full service interfaith center at Mall of America.

    + The central theme words are "One World Many Faiths".

    + Oasis will be a safe and hospitable place for discovering spiritual welcome and message products amid the hustle and bustle of the Mall of America.

    + Oasis will offer free information about congregations/religions. It will also offer message products for sale. It is intended to be a self supporting venture.

    + A welcoming environment for Mall visitors.

    + Information on and referral to community congregations.

    + Information on world religions using print and web page resources.

    + An interfaith atmosphere with a focus on people of many religions and cultures.

    + T-shirts, denim shirts, caps presenting respect between religions;

    + Books related to interfaith experience;

    + Year 2001 interfaith calendar;

    + Cards and book marks with interfaith themes;

    + Water in 16.9 oz bottles under a MARC label;

     + Mugs featuring symbols of religions and theme wording;

     + River Stones with appropriate words to be recalled;

     + Plush animal with T-shirt based on theme

      + Seasonal items e.g. Nativity Scene, Menorah

    + Engraved wooden picture frame

    + Journal book with theme words/logo.

General design, build out and fixtures is by Mall assigned Are Code 212. Design consultation will be from Graphic Answers and MARC Board members.

Receiving patrons in a welcoming manner that honors their religious traditions while at the same time encouraging them to purchase message products will be based on operation manual procedures. Sales personnel appearance, demeanor and understanding of the mission of Oasis will be met in the hiring and training process.

Credit cards, checks and cash will be received. Provision for making contribution to the vision of Oasis and The Meaning Store will be available as well.

Shopping bags, sacks and envelopes will be provided.

Cash register, bar code reading equipment, and inventory record procedures are under development.

Computer screen source for local and global religious information as well as print out capability is under design and will be available when funding is in place.

Welcoming is a central feature in the light of the interfaith theme. Sales and managerial personnel will be trained and operational manuals developed to assure high quality and continuous improvement.

Referral to member congregations and to community service agencies will be a feature based on data base resources. The customer experience is intended to go beyond the moment of purchase. MARC envisions that a form of extended community will grow from the Oasis experience.

Because of the unique interfaith theme it is necessary for MARC to develop its own product line for the most part. A trial five-month sales plan begins with a carefully chosen message product items in order to assess customer desires. Analysis of customer preferences begins on the day Oasis opens. An agreement with the major supplier provides for rapid product development.

A break even budget has been designed.

Attention will be given to business ratios to evaluate actual experience.

Procedures are being developed. Major vendor will use "coop buying" in order to maintain minimal initial start up costs and yet guarantee product availability. "Dating" will be used once experience shows that the concept is productive. The primary vendor will handle storage of some products.

Categories of message products have been developed. Seasonal promotion begins immediately because of opening in October.

The Mall of America advertising people will consult on best procedures and will handle internal advertising and promotion.

The MARC congregations will provide broad local notice of Oasis. St Paul and Minneapolis papers will give story coverage. A promotional calendar will be developed. Visual merchandising will be developed with Mall personnel.

Management, at start up, will be handle by organization leaders as a non-salary item. This is done to aid in writing procedural manuals needed for this unique operation.

Part time sales personnel will be hired. Advancement to management is envisioned. Some additional non salaried sales presence will be done by Board and Council members. Training will be done by managers and as procedural manuals are being written.

The payroll will be managed with a hired bookkeeper.

Stock and ticketing procedures are developed.

Cash register, banking and accounting procedures being developed.

IRS non-profit 501 c 3 regulations will be handled with experienced bookkeeper.

Operating expenses for a 5 month period are projected at $57,232.00. Income from message products sales is projected at $49,200.00.  $15,000.00 now in an account for Oasis is for start up expenses and to support the early days of the venture. This money comes from Friends of MARC - individuals who believe in spiritual presence in the market place; and MARC member congregations. The expenses of start up are demanding. An additional $5,000.00 is needed to bring the total figure to $20,000.00. Contributions are invited. Use the Donate.net source or send to MARC (Oasis), 305 E 77th St., Richfield, MN 55423.

MARC, as a 501 c 3 non-profit, operates with a non salaried Board of Directors. All income beyond the cost of doing business will be used to develop the concept and prepare for the Meaning Store.
